To nurture a generation of children who are confident in their identity, connected to the land and culture, and supported in their holistic development within a safe and inclusive environment.

Mission Statement:

To provide accessible, culturally grounded, and developmentally appropriate early childhood education for the children and families of Apitipi Anicinapek Nation. We aim to foster a love for learning, pride in culture, and support for families through child-focused care and land-based teachings.

Overview

The Apitipi Anicinapek Nation Education Centre officially opened its doors on April 2nd, 2024, beginning as a small initiative in the Choose Life Classroom. Since its launch, the program has experienced tremendous growth and transformation into a vibrant and vital part of the community. Over the past year, the Centre has focused on supporting early childhood development through a culturally grounded and family-centred approach. With guidance and mentorship from community members and NAN (Nishnawbe Aski Nation), the program was shaped with deep cultural roots and responsive strategies to meet community needs.

Key achievements this year include:

Serving 14 families with consistent childcare services. Hiring a Land-Based Recreation Specialist to lead cultural teachings. Expanding programming to include land-based learning, gardening, social-emotional development, and cultural education. Acquiring a modular home with three playrooms, two bathrooms, and a full kitchen. Securing a program vehicle to support outings, land-based programming, and transportation needs. Overall, the Centre continues to evolve with input from families and caregivers, always striving to meet community needs while maintaining safe and culturally respectful practices.

Events and Programs

Cultural Connection Activities: Children were introduced to traditional medicines, teachings, and ceremonies guided by a Land-Based Recreation Specialist.

Land-Based Learning & Gardening: The program integrated time outdoors and seasonal gardening to teach land appreciation and sustainability. Social-Emotional Learning: Children participated in activities that supported emotional expression, regulation, and peer relationships. Childcare Support: Daily services were provided by two dedicated staff members, offering parents (including respite and working parents) a trusted childcare option.

Program Growth & Expansion:

Acquired a modular home in July 2024 that now houses the program. Secured a vehicle in September 2024 to assist with transportation and programming needs. Community Engagement: The program adapted throughout the year to better serve families, always maintaining appropriate staff-to-child ratios and prioritizing safety.

Looking Forward

As we move into the next fiscal year, our goals include: Continuing to grow our cultural offerings and land-based curriculum. Seeking additional funding for staff expansion and program enrichment, and exploring opportunities to provide even more flexible childcare options to meet the diverse needs of families.

Strengthening partnerships with community members and elders to embed language and tradition in daily programming. Pursuing a traditional name for the Education Centre in collaboration with language speakers and knowledge keepers.
